VADODARA: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has finally identified an agency to put up a solar power plant on the Solar Dome on the Akota-Dandiabazaar Road. The civic body will save Rs 87lakh per year once the facility kicks off.

The solar power plant has been taken up as a Smart City project. The project was envisaged in July 2014 soon after the Akota-Dandia Bazaar route was inaugurated by the then chief minister Narendra Modi in February 2014. Work on the project eventually kicked off only after a year.

The progress on the project has been slow as the work was done above a busy road. Work on the steel dome structure is nearly over now. While the civic body was earlier looking for a partner on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis to take up the work, it has now decided to spend on the installation of the solar panels.

The project is coming up on a stretch of around 280meters on the Akota-Dandiabazaar road. The area under the dome will also be beautified and shall be open for use to citizens.

The solar plant will be installed at cost of Rs 11.16crore at the site and will have a capacity of 983KW. It will generate around 14lakh units of power every year. The VMC is expecting to make a savings of Rs 87lakh per year with the project.

The work on the power plant is expected to be completed in around six months. After the Smart City board cleared the project in its recent meeting, the agency that was zeroed down was issued a work order on Friday.
